Sparkling early in the day.

Faris.

The water clarity didn't compare to what I was used to at Lake Wanaka.

Professional triathletes start the swim.

Already making ground on many other pro athlethes at half way in the swim.

Faris's swim time of 46mins set up his day.

Pro's wore yellow caps, blue were age groupers.

Walking maybe quicker than diving?

Caroline Steffen (above and below).

Interesting variety of cap colours for the pros.

The blue caps were the first start group who started just behind the professional athletes at the same time.

Low light made the photography tricky.

wThe water temperature felt warmer than the air temperature to me. It was about 22 degrees.

Faris 5th out on the bike, about 30 seconds down on the first out.

The photos are all in chronological order.

These were some of the guys who were among the faster pros.

Not on the official start list ?

Ivan Tejero from Spain.

Caroline Steffen was well ahead of most other female athletes after the bike.

Patrick Vernay with plenty of gels on his bike frame.

The post race conference was all in German. Both the male and female winners indicated they would have prefered a much warmer day. Caroline Steffen said the cold burned up a lot of extra calories on the day just keeping warm.
